How my Previous Organization Hit its Performance Targets but Burnt-out their Team

Simply Performance Management

I remember the quarter like it was yesterday.

Biggest numbers we’d ever hit.
Every KPI in the green.
Leadership was thrilled.

But my colleagues were exhausted.

Burnt-out.

Checked out.

One by one, they started leaving.
Not for more money. Not for better titles.
But for peace. For balance. For a job that didn’t drain them.

That’s when it hit me.
The organization wasn't building a great team. But running them into the ground.

For years, the leaders thought success meant:

  • Push harder
  • Demand more
  • Hit the numbers no matter what

And it worked, until it didn’t.

Because when your best people leave, all those wins start to feel empty.

The Hidden Cost of Chasing Targets

Corporate culture sells us this idea:

"One more late night…"
"One more stretch target…"
"One more quarter of grinding…"

Then what?
You wake up one day with great results and no one left to celebrate with.

My previous organization learnt the hard way that real success goes beyond hitting numbers. It also includes keeping the people who help you hit them.

What I Do Differently Now

I learnt valuable leadership lessons from that organization and do things differently as a leader today.

Instead of squeezing every last drop out of my team, I focus on building something sustainable:

  • Prioritize people over short-term wins. Burnout kills long-term success
  • Listen. High performers will tell you when they’re struggling if you’re paying attention
  • Stop rewarding burnout. Working late isn’t a badge of honor
  • Play the long game. A strong, motivated team will outperform a burnt-out one every time

If you’re leading a team, ask yourself:

Are you building something that lasts? Or just pushing for one more quarter?

Your biggest performance risk isn’t missing a target.
It’s losing the people who help you hit them.

Ensure you’re playing the right game.

That's it for today.

See you next week!✌

Simply Performance Management Read on my Page During a recent strategy session, a business leader shared something interesting. His company tracked dozens of key performance indicators (KPIs), generated detailed weekly reports, and collected mountains of data from various sources. Yet, despite all this, their decision-making felt… off. When I asked how they used the data to drive action, his response was telling: "We track everything because we want to be data-driven." But here’s the thing:...

Simply Performance Management Read on my Page Most businesses wake up one day and realize something's off. Suppliers are causing them more headaches than they expected. They followed the usual advice: Choose the cheapest option Go for the quickest solution Stick with the "trusted" vendor But then, the costs start piling up. Quality begins to slip. And the bigger picture is falling apart. This Nigerian proverb sums it up perfectly:"When the roots of a tree begin to decay, it spreads death to...
